The Hunger Games Trilogy..Books and the Upcoming Movies!

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with every one out to make sure you don't live to see the morning?

Fiction is something I love reading/watching, I think we have more than enough of our share of reality in our lives! Hence today's post is about a Book Trilogy called "The Hunger Games", written by Suzanne Collins. The genre is science fiction/young adult/adventure/dystopian. I'm sure most of you must have heard about it, or read the books, the trilogy is being made into films, the first part is to be released next year.

May the odds be ever in your favor!

The story starts in an unidentified time in the future, after the destruction of North America in a nation called Panem. Panem consists of a wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts.

As punishment for a previous rebellion against the Capitol, every year, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected at random and forced to participate in the Hunger Games, a televised event in which the participants, or "tributes," must fight to the death in a dangerous, outdoor arena, controlled by the Capitol, until only one remains. The story follows fatherless 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12, who volunteers for the 74th Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose. Katniss is skilled in archery and hunting, which makes her a fierce competitor. She wears a mockingjay pin -- the flaming symbol on the poster -- which is a sign of rebellion against Panem's oppressive government. Also participating from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a boy whom Katniss knows from school.

I don't want to spoil the suspense for those who want to read the book or watch the movie so I won't go any further on the story. The Hunger Games was first published as a hardcover in the US on September 14, 2008. The second part is called "Catching Fire" and the third is "Mockingjay", which followed afterwards.

Sales as per Wikipedia:
As of February 11, 2010, The Hunger Games has sold 800,000 copies and 26 foreign editions. Rights to the novel have been sold in 38 territories, and there are over 2.9 million copies in print. The book is a USA Today and The New York Times Best Seller. It was on The New York Times list for over 100 consecutive weeks as of September 2010.

Production and Release:
Lions Gate Entertainment acquired worldwide distribution rights to a film adaptation of The Hunger Games, which is being produced by Nina Jacobson's production company Color Force. Suzzane Collins adapted the novel for film herself, and her script was reviewed by screenwriter Billy Ray. It is anticipated to have a PG-13 rating.
The film will be directed by Gary Ross with Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Katniss, Josh Hutherson as the role of Peeta, and Liam Hemsworth as the role of Gale. The production started off in late Spring 2011, and the anticipated release date is March 23, 2012.

It's been speculated that the Hunger Games would be made into four movies just like its predecessors 'The Harry Potter Books' in which the last part has been split into two films and "The Twilight Saga"; the last part of which is being released in two parts. The hype is tremendous let's see how the movies go, the books are gripping, suspenseful and entertaining I hope the films do them justice!
