[the story behind this painting "Flora MacDonald's Farewell to Bonnie Prince Charlie.( Isle of Skye. 1st July 1746)"]

This famous painting by S. Joy records one of the most dramatic and moving moments in Scottish history. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, or Bonnie Prince Charlie, was the eldest son of the Old Pretender to the british throne (James II's son). Many people in Scotland and England regarded him as the rightful king.

Prince Charlie landed in Scotland in August 1745, raised his standard and gathered the clans, and launched the second Jacobite Rebellion. The rising almost succeeded, but was finally crushed at Culloden near Inverness on 16th April 1746. The greatest manhunt of all time followed.

The Prince was hunted around the highlands for five months, with a price of 30,000 pounds on his head. Yet his highlanders stayed loyal.

It was Flora Macdonald who made escape possible by disguising Charles as her maid Betty Burke, and taking him to Portree in Skye. There they said farewell, and Charles boarded a ship to France. With him went all hopes of the Jacobite cause. He died in exile in Rome in 1788. Flora MacDonald emigrated to America, where her husband and son fought in the American War of Independence.
